Earlier today, 81 year-old Justice Anthony Kennedy called President Trump and officially rendered his retirement from the Supreme Court by the end of July.

Shortly afterward, Senator Ted Cruz went on the record and says, “Today is really an historic day.” (VIDEO BELOW.)

President Trump tweets his statement.

Additionally, Cruz recommends Kennedy is replaced by a constitutional conservative. Moreover, Cruz says, “I think the single best choice the President could make to fill this vacancy is Senator Mike Lee. I think he would be extraordinary.”

The Senator then says, “About half of the nominees for Republican Presidents have put on the court have turned into train wrecks. [They] have turned into liberal activists.

The reason why I think the best choice that President Trump could make is Mike Lee (UT-R) is because I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that Mike Lee would be faithful to the Constitution and Bill of Rights,” Cruz says.

Cruz then says, the Kennedy nomination is an opportunity “to have a profound impact on the court that could last for decades.”

WATCH Ted Cruz on his choice for the Supreme Court after Kennedy’s retirement pick:

Currently, the balance of the court is 5 conservative and 4 liberal. With Kennedy gone, the balance could go either way. However, his last few votes have been on upholding the constitution with the conservative balanced votes.

Furthermore, if Kennedy is replaced with a conservative who is slightly more conservative and less liberal in their positions than Kennedy. Then the balance of the court would most likely remain 5 to 4.

In ending, as the Texas Senator stated, he would like to see a “principled constitutionalist to the Supreme Court and the Federal Court who will uphold our rights and protect the Bill of Rights.”
