Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) quietly apologized to the Cherokee Nation for taking a DNA test to prove she had Native-American ancestry as she prepares to throw her hat into the ring for the Democratic 2020 presidential campaign.
Warren’s DNA test angered some tribal leaders and sparked tons of political pushback against her at the time in October.
Cherokee Nation spokeswoman Julie Hubbard said in a statement, “Senator Warren has reached out to us and has apologized to the tribe. We are encouraged by this dialogue and understanding that being a Cherokee Nation tribal citizen is rooted in centuries of culture and laws, not through DNA tests.”
“We are encouraged by her action and hope that the slurs and mockery of tribal citizens and Indian history and heritage will now come to an end,” Hubbard added.

Warren, who was born and grew up in Oklahoma, had for decades claimed to have Native American heritage. But it wasn’t until her successful 2012 campaign for the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts that she revealed she had claimed minority status at universities where she worked. The controversy became an issue in her race against Republican incumbent Scott Brown, reported Fox News.
The DNA results also fueled claims by Republican critics that she used a trace amount of Native American heritage to advance her academic career. The test itself revealed strong evidence the Massachusetts senator had a Native-American ancestor dating back six to 10 generations. But that means if Warren’s great-great-great-grandmother were Native American, she would be considered 1/64 Native American. Should Warren’s ancestor date back 10 generations, she would be only 1/1,024 Native American, per Fox News.
Donald Trump Jr. and former Arkansas Governor, Mike Huckabee took note of Warren’s apology and pounced at her latest move. (Continued Below)
Donald Trump Jr. asked, “How about apologizing to Americans and actual minorities she likely displaced in schools/jobs over the years with fake claims of minority status?”
Former Arkansas Governor, Mike Huckabee wrote, “I took DNA test too. My Dad once told me “Son, don’t look far up your family tree-there’s stuff up there you don’t need to see!” So I will not announce my ancestry results to protect them and me.”
