Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), spoke in Cedar Rapids at the Iowa Democratic Party’s Hall of Fame event Saturday where he claimed his place among superheroes like Marvel’s Avengers.
He suggested that he and the other 2020 Democratic candidates were in it together to save America.
Rep. Swalwell, however, argued that the 2016 GOP primary was more like “The Hunger Games.”
Swalwell said, “Thank you, Iowa. Congratulations to tonight’s honorees. Welcome to my fellow candidates, whom I consider, we are all a part of being The Avengers. The Republicans in 2016, that was ‘The Hunger Games.’”
“We are in this with your help and support to save this country we love so much,” Swalwell continued. “I’ll tell you what you did, you cut our time in Hell in half,” he said, referring to the 2018 midterm elections. “You gave us a shot to save the country. But I think it is time that we don’t just play defense, but we actually go on offense.”
Donald Trump Jr. caught wind of Swalwell’s Avenger’s comment and dropped a few hilarious truth-bombs on Twitter directed at the California Congressman. (Continued Below)
Trump Jr. wrote, “You know the ‘I’d love to have a beer with that guy’ scale so many politicians get measured by? I think it’s safe to say that exactly ZERO people would want to have one with Eric Swalwell.”
Dave Weigel of The Washington Post witnessed first hand in the audience some people who did not agree with Swalwell’s “Avenger” comment either and he revealed, “Some mutters of ‘oh no’ near me when Swalwell says the crowded field is like The Avengers”.
Don Jr. responded to Weigel’s announcement and replied, “Ever wonder what it would look like for a presidential candidate to build their entire stump speech around Jeb! “please clap” style moments? Ladies and gentlemen, I present Eric Swalwell”. (Video Below)
Swalwell also claimed he will “always be real with you”, and added that he will “always be bold without the bull”, only to look around and receives zero claps but a few laughs, hence why Don Jr.’s “Jeb! Please clap” comment hits home.
In 2016, Jeb Bush asked his audience during a town hall to “please clap”.
