For thousands of people across Wisconsin on Tuesday, fears of the coronavirus outbreak did not stop them from participating in the state’s elections, where critical races such as the Democratic presidential primary and a key state Supreme Court seat were being decided, reported MSN.

Following Wisconsin voting, former President Barack Hussein Obama weighed in on Friday to voice his support for “vote-by-mail” amid the coronavirus pandemic but criticized Wisconsin’s decision to hold in-person voting.

The Wisconsin election took place Tuesday amid a stay-at-home order issued by Gov. Tony Evers (D), who made a last-minute attempt to postpone the election that was blocked by courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, reported The Hill.

Obama took to Twitter Friday with a series of tweets backing “vote-by-mail” efforts amid the coronavirus pandemic.

He posted a New York Times article titled: Voting in Wisconsin During a Pandemic: Lines, Masks and Plenty of Fear, then added, “No one should be forced to choose between their right to vote and their right to stay healthy like the debacle in Wisconsin this week.”

In another tweet, Obama posted an article from NPR titled: Coronavirus May Reshape Who Votes And How In The 2020 Election, and wrote, “Everyone should have the right to vote safely, and we have the power to make that happen. This shouldn’t be a partisan issue.” Continued Below

Obama concluded by tweeting another article from the New York Times titled: Does Vote-by-Mail Favor Democrats? No. It’s a False Argument by Trump, and said, “Let’s not use the tragedy of a pandemic to compromise our democracy. Check the facts of vote by mail.”

The pandemic has sparked a partisan battle over efforts to expand voting by mail for the fall elections, with President Trump strongly opposing the move, citing concerns about voter fraud.

“Republicans should fight very hard when it comes to state wide mail-in voting. Democrats are clamoring for it. Tremendous potential for voter fraud, and for whatever reason, doesn’t work out well for Republicans,” the Commander in Chief tweeted Wednesday. Continued Below

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has been stern in her efforts recently to include resources for vote-by-mail in the 4th coronavirus stimulus package that she is already pushing ahead to craft.

Pelosi confirmed that she would be seeking more resources for a “vote-by-mail” system during an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Tuesday. “Yes, we want the resources to be there and no obstacles to that voting to take place,” said Pelosi.
