A video that has surfaced on social media from 2016, shows former Vice President Joe Biden speaking to service members at a military base before he instructed them to clap and appeared to address the airmen “jokingly” as “stupid bastards.”

During a five-day trip to the Middle East in March 2016, Biden had vowed that the United States would “squeeze the heart” out of Islamic State and destroy it. Biden visited U.S. airmen stationed at Al-Dhafra Air Base near the United Arab Emirates capital of Abu Dhabi, as reported by VOA News.

Circulating on social media, Joe Biden said in his remarks to the service members, “Clap for that, you stupid bastards”.

Another video uploaded on YouTube in 2017 shows Biden’s remarks in full context:

USA Today reported:

After that remark, expecting applause, Biden encouraged the troops to clap for Johnson in part by calling them “stupid bastards.”

Once they began to applaud, he continued, “Man, you are a dull bunch. Must be slow here, man.”

However, Andrew Bates, a spokesman for his campaign, said it was a joke.

“Vice President Biden was jokingly encouraging the audience to clap for an airwoman on the stage, and a number of service members can be seen laughing and smiling at the comment. Seconds before, he praised them for ‘the incredible sacrifices (they) make for our country,’” Bates told The Daily Beast.

“He thanked them for their patriotism and courage throughout, and closed his remarks by saying, ‘You’re the finest generation of warriors the world has ever, ever known’ — receiving an enthusiastic ovation,” Bates added. Continued Below

Footage of Biden’s remarks has surfaced just weeks after The Atlantic claimed “anonymous sources” said that President Trump referred to both active and former military service members as “losers” and “suckers,” which he has vehemently denied.

Multiple sources who were on the trip in question with President Trump, refuted The Atlantic’s reporting.

The Commander in Chief earlier in month, also took to Twitter, saying, “The Atlantic Magazine is dying, like most magazines, so they make up a fake story in order to gain some relevance. Story already refuted, but this is what we are up against. Just like the Fake Dossier. You fight and and fight, and then people realize it was a total fraud!”
