GOP Leaders React To Pres Trump Reopening Govt & Standing His Ground To Fully Secure Border

President Trump announced on Friday that an agreement has been made to reopen the government for 3 weeks until a deal is made on border security.

If Congress fails to secure a deal for wall funding, the Commander in Chief could declare a national emergency to build the wall. (Video Below)

President Trump will sign a bill to reopen government, to end the longest shutdown in U.S. history, until February 15th. Employees will receive their pay, which includes back pay.

In that period, he said, a bipartisan committee of House and Senate lawmakers will meet to develop a funding proposal for Homeland Security.

“We really have no choice to build a wall or steel barrier. If we don’t get a fair deal from Congress, the government will either shutdown on February 15th again, or I will use the powers afforded to me under the laws and the Constitution of the United States to address this emergency.” The President declared.

The announcement comes after President Trump insisted that Republican lawmakers were united in the push to secure wall funding, and that he would not cave on the issue. The Senate on Thursday rejected a pair of proposals to reopen the government, including one that was from the White House. (Video Below)

Conservative key figures took to twitter to praise the President on Twitter for standing his ground.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said, “I was glad to see @POTUS’s announcement that he and Democrats have reached an agreement that will immediately re-open the government, while providing the room to negotiate funding for the Department of Homeland Security.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) tweeted, “Hope Congress – in a bipartisan fashion – will work with the President and take advantage of this moment. Last best chance to take a major step toward fixing broken borders and a broken immigration system. Thank you Mr. President. Let’s make this a win-win for America!” (Video Below)

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) said, “Later today the Senate will pass a bill to end the government #shutdown that the House intends to pass & the President will sign. Everyone has committed to moving quickly to make sure impacted federal workers receive their backpay quickly.”

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) wrote, “I’m encouraged by today’s agreement, which will put people back to work and make sure they get paid. Both parties must work together in the next three weeks on a final agreement that funds border security and avoids another shutdown.”

Sen. Martha McSally (R-AZ) wrote, “The short-term CR just announced by @POTUS and agreed to by all parties is the right way forward. It will reopen the government immediately, back pay those impacted and comes with a strong commitment to go to House/Senate conference on the Homeland Security spending bill. These negotiations must be in good faith and result in resources to secure our southern border.”

Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) wrote, “Democrats have been saying for weeks they’ll negotiate on wall funding when the government is open. POTUS is now giving them yet ANOTHER opportunity to come to the table. Americans will be able to judge for themselves whether Democrats are truly serious about securing our border.”

Rep. Dan Chrenshaw (R-TX) said, “Congress must reach a reasonable, realistic solution to fund our government and protect our border. Governing from shutdown to shutdown cannot be a new norm. Our federal employees should not carry the burden of government dysfunction. Let’s get this done for the American people. The President demonstrated yet again he is willing to make a deal. I’m hopeful this will spur serious and thoughtful negotiations. Securing our border is a bipartisan issue. Improving our border security through a multifaceted approach is a win for everyone.”

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) tweeted, “As Speaker, Nancy Pelosi has an obligation to Congress & the American people to come to the table and negotiate with @realDonaldTrump. Trump’s decision today was a deal made in good faith & shows he takes our national security seriously. Now @SpeakerPelosi must do the same. I call on @SpeakerPelosi today to quickly and immediately bring a comprehensive border security package before the House for a vote. The safety of American citizens is not, and should not be, a partisan issue. #BuildTheWall.

He added, “SpeakerPelosi, you have three weeks to develop bipartisan legislation to enhance America’s border security. If you fail, or renege on the deal, I call on @realDonaldTrump to build the wall using the powers granted to the Executive Branch. Madam Speaker, don’t let America down.”

GOP Chairwoman, Ronna McDaniel said, “Once again, @realDonaldTrump has shown leadership and acted in good faith, striking a deal to reopen the government. The ball is now in the Democrats’ court. It’s time they put our country first and agree to secure the border.”
