Special Counsel Robert Mueller spoke publicly on Wednesday and officially concluded his two-year-long investigation into allegations of Russian collusion during 2016 election. Further, he is closing his office and retiring from the Department of Justice.
House Judiciary Chairman, Jerry Nadler (D-NY) responded immediately after Mueller concluded and took to Twitter on a tirade.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller, in his first public appearance since being appointed to lead the Russia investigation, said it was “not an option” to charge President Trump with a crime, citing Department of Justice policy, but maintained that if they had “confidence” that the president did not commit a crime, they “would have said so,” reported Fox News.
“I am speaking out today because our investigation is complete,” Mueller stated. “The attorney general has made the report on our investigation largely public. We are formally closing the special counsel’s office. And as well, I’m resigning from the Department of Justice to return to private life.”
Mueller explained the Justice Department’s policy states that a sitting president cannot be charged with a crime.
“Charging the president with a crime was not an option we could consider. It would be unfair to accuse someone of a crime when there could be no court resolution of the charge. We concluded that we would not reach a determination one way or the other about whether the president committed a crime,” Mueller added. “That is the office’s final position.” (Continued Below)
President Trump immediately reacted and took to Twitter to say, “Nothing changes from the Mueller Report. There was insufficient evidence and therefore, in our Country, a person is innocent. The case is closed! Thank you.”
However, Nadler jumped the gun and rushed to suggest, “Given that Special Counsel Mueller was unable to pursue criminal charges against the President, it falls to Congress to respond to the crimes, lies and other wrongdoing of President Trump – and we will do so. No one, not even the President of the United States, is above the law.”
Nadler further claimed, “Mueller also confirmed three central points: he did not exonerate the President of obstruction, obstruction of justice is a serious crime that strikes at the core of our justice system, and the Constitution points to Congress to take action to hold the President accountable.” (Continued Below)
